Aug. 17 Jubalee Fire

Jubalee Fire
This is fire season. In the 28 years we have lived up here, no fire has been close to where we live. The Jubalee (sic) Creek fire is as close as they’ve come. It is five or six miles away as the crow flies but separated from us by the Pend Oreille River. Most of the fire is in Canada and it has been burning for a week. These pictures are taken from the road above us. It is a remote fire; no people or houses are in danger.
Aug. 5 Spalding Auto Parts

Spalding Redux
These are from the second trip to Spalding’s. There are 50 acres there and always something more to see, a photograph that needs re-shooting. I know I will be going back again!
Aug. 3 Olympia, Washington

OlyWA
We took a quick over to the coast, to Olympia, Washington, to visit the kids and grandchild. We had a wonderful time, devoted mostly to family but I managed to get a few pictures in besides those of Cassius. This album contains both, so beware, baby pictures are included.

Mirabeau Revisited
The first time I took photos along the river at Mirabeau it was early spring. These were taken in the middle of summer and it was quite a different experience. Everything was dry and the sun harsh. I was on my lunch hour so there wasn’t time to go far. The only thing blooming was this fuzzy leafed plant with pink flowers. I haven’t a clue what it is but the bees were all over it.

Spalding Auto
I spent last week at a class in Spokane and took the opportunity to do some lunchtime shoots around the area of the school. The folks at Spalding Auto were kind enough to allow me to photograph around the auto yard. Being lunch hour, the time was limited and the light was harsh but I hope to be able to go back again.
Another hour was spent in the Millwood garden of my friend Gisela. The garlic spread throughout the yard was spectacular in its curls and curves. Summer has not progressed so far as to have wiped out the flowers with heat.

Box Canyon Powerhouse
My office is located at Box Canyon Dam on the Pend Oreille River. Capturing the essence of the powerhouse is an ongoing project for me. Everything is color coded to show what the pipes are carrying so it looking like the Easter bunny went crazy with a paint brush.

June Rain
Summer has not yet arrived up here, one cannot count on good weather. I had been hoping Jack and I could take our cameras and go somewhere interesting during the weekend but it wasn’t to be. We had rain sporadically both days so the best I could do was take advantage of a break in the rain to see if there were some interesting “drip” pictures. Unfortunately there were also lots of mosquitoes!

I live in a remote area of the state of Washington, just south of the border with Canada and west of Idaho. The area is beautiful in all four of its seasons though winters can seem overlong. Toadflax Lane is just a fancy name for a long driveway. DOT mandated it have a real name and toadflax is a weed that grows on the property that looks like a yellow snapdragon. You can see an example in the following picture if you click on it to see it in a larger format.
Spokane is 100 miles south, the closest city of any size. My husband Jack and I go there to take photography classes at Spokane Art School, usually from Mason McCuddin. You can see some of Mason’s recent work by going to the link on the right. There won’t be any photographs there as Mason has been working in metal lately. The school year is over, no classes during the summer so I am on my own. The pictures from the previous classes are in the Locations and Conversations links at the top of the page, new photos will be posted above as completed.
I have two cameras: a Canon Eos Rebel XT and a Olympus C 765 UltraZoom. The Rebel is my favorite but there are times when the simplicity of the Olympus comes in handy. I keep the C 765 at work for those impromptu photo opportunities and use the Rebel as my serious camera.

Love your photos, Sandi. Someday I must begin focusing on photography again. I really like the BXW photos at Spaldings. My favorites are the layers of differently textured metal parts, the big, wide front of the Chevy truck and the BXW stacked smashed cars where there is one car that shows up blue.I also like the bold yellow door. Frame that and others that are similar to it and you will have a nice grouping for your wall!
The flowers are lovely and dewy. I am still looking for fairies in the Toadflax picture. Maybe they don’t show up in photographs, but I know they are there.
